(And Why the Industry Needs to Look Beyond the Timber)

Walk around almost any marina and it’s easy to see why teak became the gold standard for yacht decking. It stays cool underfoot, offers excellent grip when wet, ages beautifully, and has been associated with quality craftsmanship for generations.

But there’s another side to the story that isn’t talked about nearly enough.

Most conversations focus on whether teak is “legal” or “FSC certified.” Far fewer ask a more important question: What does it actually take to put a teak deck on a yacht?

The answer is far more complex than simply cutting down a tree.

A Slow-Growing Resource in a Fast-Growing Industry

Teak (Tectona grandis) is not a fast-growing species. While plantations can begin harvesting after around 20–30 years, premium yacht-grade teak often comes from much older trees, valued for their straight grain, density and consistent colour.

At the same time, demand has continued to rise.

The global superyacht fleet has grown steadily over the last two decades, refit yards remain busy, and thousands of smaller yachts require replacement decks every year. Every new build and every refit adds pressure to a resource that simply cannot regenerate quickly.

Unlike many building materials, you can’t increase teak production overnight. Nature works on its own timeline.

The Hidden Waste Nobody Sees

One of the biggest misconceptions is that every harvested teak log becomes yacht decking.

In reality, only a relatively small portion is suitable for premium marine use.

Decking requires boards that are:

  • Straight-grained
  • Free from defects and knots
  • Stable enough to withstand decades of exposure
  • Consistent in colour and appearance

Large sections of each tree don’t meet those standards. Some are used for furniture or construction. Some become lower-value products. Others generate waste during milling and processing.

By the time a finished teak plank reaches a shipyard, considerably more timber has already been harvested than most owners ever realise.

It’s Not Just the Tree

When people think about environmental impact, they often picture deforestation.

The reality is much broader.

Before a single plank reaches a yacht, it has already gone through an energy-intensive journey involving:

  • Harvesting equipment
  • Transport from forests to sawmills
  • Kiln drying
  • Milling and machining
  • International shipping
  • Distribution to boatyards around the world

Many yachts receiving teak decks are built thousands of kilometres away from where the timber originated.

Every step adds emissions long before the first caulking seam is laid.

Plantation Teak Isn’t a Perfect Solution Either

Plantation-grown teak has helped reduce pressure on natural forests, and responsibly managed plantations are certainly preferable to illegal logging.

But plantations still require land, water and decades of management before producing mature timber.

Large monoculture plantations can also support far less biodiversity than natural forests, especially when replacing native ecosystems.

Certification schemes have improved standards considerably, but certification alone doesn’t eliminate the environmental footprint of growing, harvesting and transporting teak.

The Environmental Cost Doesn’t End at Installation

A teak deck isn’t maintenance-free.

Over its lifetime it will often require:

  • Cleaning chemicals
  • Sanding
  • Repairs
  • Replacement caulking
  • Individual plank replacement

Eventually, every teak deck reaches the end of its service life.

Unlike some materials that can be recycled into similar products, old marine teak is frequently contaminated with adhesives, sealants and caulking compounds, making large-scale recycling difficult.

Many removed decks ultimately become waste.

Why More Builders Are Looking at Alternatives

The conversation around yacht decking has changed noticeably over the last decade.

Some builders are choosing synthetic decking because it reduces reliance on hardwoods.

Others are experimenting with cork composites, recycled materials or alternative hardwood species.

Each option comes with trade-offs.

Synthetic products reduce pressure on forests but are petroleum-based and eventually become waste themselves.

Alternative woods often lack teak’s durability or appearance.

Reclaimed teak gives existing timber a second life, although supply is limited and consistency can be difficult.

There is no perfect solution.

The challenge isn’t simply replacing teak, it’s finding ways to reduce overall demand while extending the life of existing resources.

A Different Way of Looking at the Problem

Perhaps the question shouldn’t be whether teak is “good” or “bad.”

Responsibly sourced teak is still one of the best-performing natural materials available for marine decking.

The bigger issue is recognising that every square metre represents decades of natural growth and a significant environmental investment.

That means treating teak as a resource worth replacing, not simply consuming.

There’s no single solution to the environmental challenges surrounding teak. Responsibly sourced timber, longer-lasting decks and careful purchasing decisions all play a role.

The yachting industry has always valued craftsmanship, longevity and respect for the materials it uses. Teak should be no different.

Understanding its true environmental cost encourages better decisions – whether that’s choosing responsibly sourced timber, extending the life of an existing deck, or supporting initiatives that give something back to the landscape rather than simply taking from it.

The real value of a teak deck isn’t just how it looks today, it’s also about the legacy we leave behind for the generations that follow.
